Great Reference Book for Writers,
 Â
I really like the common sense approach of this book. The author covered an amazing number of copywriting topics and pitfalls in a way that didn’t make me yawn. She gets to the point in a conversational style that entertains while it informs. This book is an excellent addition to my resource library and I’m already using it frequently as a reference book.
The layout is excellent. It’s so easy to look up a specific writing problem and find some great advice on one point without having to read through a long chapter. I write numerous articles for myself and for clients. There’s the tendency to get in a rut and this book will get you out of ruts quickly. This isn’t a book on “how to write” – it’s a book that will help you write well and avoid common pitfalls that lead to bland, boring copy.
If you need to pep up dull writing or use the power of suggestion in your articles, a clear explanation is followed by action steps that will get your mind busy solving the problem. This book is full of small tips, too, that will help you write enticing copy others will want to read.
This is a book I’ll be using often. The extensive index makes it super easy to quickly find what I need. Anyone who writes for their own blog/site or is a freelance writer will love this book. New writers will be off to a good start and it’s great as a problem solver and kick in the shins for experienced writers, too. I love it!

|Here’s the beef…,
Unlike many collections of past columns, this book delivers plenty of meat to go with the memories. Marcia has collected some of the best of her “Marketing Minutes” and grouped them into useful sections. Each ‘chapter’ only takes a couple of minutes to read, and you’ll learn new things and re-learn things you’ve forgotten from that.
But the real power lies in the short exercises following each piece. While you might hit a home run with any one them, depending on your circumstances, the power lies in the cumulative effect of making improvements over time – not unlike compound interest.
If you’re looking for a copywriting manual, keep looking. This little book will not teach you how to write “killer copy” (a phrase I despise). It will show you many ways to make the copy (and other marketing materials) you already have more effective.
If all or part of your living depends on selling things to other people, get this book. In fact, order two copies and keep one in your car or briefcase. When you have to wait for something, don’t stare into space. Pull out the book and read one of the pieces. Do the exercise or read the research tidbit and think about how you can apply it to your own efforts.
In fact, if you make all or part of your living from persuading people to do what you want them to do, this book will help you do a better job of persuasion.
