Well, the design is cool and it certainly seems like a good idea. Unfortunately, like other True Utility products, this one is poorly executed. This company apparently has some really creative designers, but poor manufacturing standards. I’ve bought 3 of their gadgets and run into the same issue with all of them. Looks great, but falls short when actually used.

The Turbojet is roughly the size and shape of a dog-tag and has a cool tactical look. Too bad the metal is cheap pot metal and the black border isn’t rubberized or anodized or anything. It’s just spray painted. So after a week in the pants pocket it’s looking pretty ghetto-fabulous. Honestly, I’ve maybe used the lighter 10 times and it looks like it’s been run over by a car, with the paint flaking off and the “stainless steel”-looking plasticized pot-metal scratched to heck.

Now, the actual lighter mechanism seems to work alright. Like most cheaper piezo-ignition lighter’s it almost never lights on the first click, but on the 2nd or 3rd, it lights up in a pretty good wind and will start a fire for you. If you want a cheap turbojet lighter, you’d do as well to hit up your corner convenience store. This is that cheap. It really isn’t as nice as it looks in the pictures.

I really want to like this True Utility company for their great ideas, but their execution continues to disappoint. Sorry, but I can’t recommend this product.

The lighter looks nice. Stainless steel is brushed, but attached to the rest of the lighter by an adhesive it appears. Full metal casing, sturdy. However adjusting the flame is near impossible. Removing the internals is easy enough. It already has trouble lighting after a couple of weeks. It doesn’t light first try, it sometimes sticks and stays lit even when released. It’s performance lacks, and it comes basically without a manual or instructions. For the price I guess I shouldn’t complain ($14.99), but I had a $5 one that lasted for a couple years pretty well even after being submerged in water.
